The Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection in Mariupol

About the project

About the project

There is a standard belief that the most interesting projects are implemented only in the capital and the largest cities, but this is far from the case. Many initiatives of the Vadym Novynskyi Foundation are aimed at the development of spiritual and cultural life, and social initiatives in different regions of our country. A vivid example is the construction of the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection, the highest Orthodox church in Ukraine, in the city of metallurgists and sailors, in Mariupol.

A unique building designed by a team of experts led by architect Stanislav Stolov is almost completed. The cathedral’s foundation was laid in 2007. Today, the building is about 85 metres high (it is 5 metres higher than the Annunciation Cathedral in Kharkiv), and the diameter of the base part of its dome is 33 metres, which is 4 metres larger than the size of the famous dome of St. Sophia Church in Constantinople. Up to 6,500 people will be able to pray together in the new house of God.

The Vadym Novynskyi Foundation has been actively supporting the construction for seven years. According to Vadym Novynskyi, the cathedral has every chance to become a landmark of Mariupol.

A significant scope of work still remains to be done until the completion of the project, but by joint efforts, the moment when thousands of Mariupol residents will gather under the cathedral’s grand dome for the first time may come very soon.
